Most of what changes in Riverside in August is easy to miss if you're only half paying attention to the calendar. The free museum days are quietly running out. The concert calendar is doing the opposite, stacking its two biggest nights onto the same two Saturdays the walking tours are booked. If you treat the month as one long list of things to maybe get to, you'll burn your free Sunday on nothing in particular and then discover you needed to buy a ticket weeks ago for the night everyone else already planned around.
Here's the part worth knowing before you build a weekend around it: August 15 and August 29 are the only two Saturdays this month where the city's Mt. Rubidoux Walking Tour lines up with a headline evening show downtown. Every other Saturday in August has one or the other, not both.
The free Sundays have an actual deadline
Riverside Art Museum and The Cheech run Free Summer Sundays every week from June 7 through September 6, 2026. After that, it goes back to paid admission except for First Sundays October through May. That gives residents exactly four more free Sundays this year, and the current lineup includes Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966 to 2026 and Bernard Hoyes' Out from Under the Net, both included with the free Sunday admission that covers both buildings.
If you've been meaning to walk through with the kids on a whim some weekend, the whim has a shelf life now. September 6 is the last one before the museum reverts to its regular admission schedule.
The monthly rhythm that doesn't expire is the Riverside Arts Walk, held the first Thursday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. downtown. That one keeps going into the fall, so it's a lower-stakes way to see galleries without racing a deadline.
Two Saturdays left on the mountain, two Fridays left downtown
The city's Mt. Rubidoux Walking Tour runs on a handful of Saturdays each month, and August's remaining dates are the 15th and the 29th, both starting at 8 a.m. at the Mt. Rubidoux Trailhead near Ryan Bonaminio Park. It's a guided walk covering the mountain's history and views, priced at $21.20 and described as suitable for all fitness levels, according to the Raincross Gazette's August event roundup.
Downtown, the Mission Inn Foundation runs its own historic walking tour on Fridays, August 14 and 28, at 3:30 p.m., starting from 3598 Main Street. That one covers the Riverside County Courthouse exterior, the neighborhood's historic architecture and murals, and the Main Street Freedom Walk, for $23.18.

Notice the pairing. The Mission Inn Foundation walk falls the Friday before each remaining Mt. Rubidoux Saturday. If you wanted to string together a downtown history walk on Friday afternoon and a mountain hike Saturday morning, both weekends this month let you do it back to back.
Same nights, more competition for a parking spot
Here's where the second calendar comes in. The Fox Performing Arts Center and the Riverside Municipal Auditorium both sit within a few downtown blocks of the walking tour meeting points, and both venues have their heaviest August nights on exactly the Saturdays the mountain tour runs.
On August 15, Fox has Los Yonics Zamacona in the evening, the same day as the morning Mt. Rubidoux walk. On August 29, it's a genuine collision: the Riverside Municipal Auditorium hosts Amor Prohibido, a tribute to Selena, with doors at 7 p.m. and the show at 8, while Fox has comedians Teo Gonzalez and Mario Aguilar the same night. That's on top of the morning's Mt. Rubidoux tour and the city's Corporation Yard surplus sale, running 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. that same Saturday with furniture, electronics, bikes, and office equipment priced to move (credit or mobile pay only, no cash).
The rest of the month spreads out more evenly. Fox has Bee Gees Fever on August 21, a screening of Little Shop of Horrors for its 40th anniversary around August 14, and Antes Que Nos Olviden on August 28. The Riverside Municipal Auditorium has LUCKI on August 20 and the Latin Legacy Tour with MC Magic, Baby Bash, and Lil' Rob on August 22. Those are real nights out on their own, but none of them ask you to also find parking for a museum crowd or a surplus sale at the same time.
If you want to actually do both halves of the day on one of the double-booked Saturdays, here's a sequence that works without one thing running into the next:
- Arrive at the Mt. Rubidoux Trailhead by 7:45 a.m. for the 8 a.m. walking tour.
- Head downtown by late morning for the Corporation Yard sale if it's August 29, or the Saturday farmers market on Main Street either week.
- Eat downtown in the afternoon, since you're already parked in the corridor near Mission Inn Avenue.
- Buy evening tickets ahead of time. Neither the Fox nor the Riverside Municipal Auditorium shows on these two Saturdays are the kind you want to show up for at the door.
The market doesn't run out
Unlike the tours and the free museum Sundays, the Riverside Downtown Farmers Market on Main Street between 5th and 6th has no closing date attached to it. It runs every Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with regulars like Winchester Cheese Co. for aged gouda and Old Towne Baking Co. for fresh bread. If the tour schedule or the concert calendar doesn't line up with your weekend, the market is the one thing downtown you can count on showing up for without checking a countdown first.
The kids who just got back from nationals
Riverside Arts Academy students spent part of the summer representing the city on a bigger stage, performing at the YOLA National Festival and Mariachi Nationals. The organization is holding a fundraiser this month to support the program, which is worth knowing about if you've noticed the mariachi and youth orchestra programs around town and wondered where the pipeline actually starts.
On a lighter note, Riverside Art Museum is layering in a free zine-making workshop on August 30, from 1 to 4 p.m., led by Brookes Reeder of Lunchtime Print House. You can come to one session or all of them. Since August 30 falls inside the Free Summer Sunday window, it's a two-for-one afternoon if you time it right, a hands-on workshop and a no-cost walk through the current exhibitions before the free admission period runs out the following week.
What this actually means for your last two weekends of summer
The short version: August 15 and August 29 are the two Saturdays where the Mt. Rubidoux Walking Tour and a major downtown show land on the same date. Everything else in the month is spaced out enough that you can pick and choose without a conflict. If you've got your eye on both a walking tour and a concert this month, those are the two dates to build around, and the two dates where buying tickets or arriving early actually matters. Either way, the free museum Sundays run out on September 6, the Corporation Yard sale doesn't come back until its next scheduled date, and the farmers market on Main Street will be there next Saturday no matter what else is going on downtown.
